Cora and Caesar escape the brutality of the Randall plantation and set out on a perilous trek across the South, hunted by ruthless slave‑catchers like Ridgeway and Boseman. Their journey is marked by fleeting alliances and betrayals as they navigate a chain of covert underground‑railroad stations in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Indiana. When they finally reach the Valentine farm, they join a thriving free‑black community that relies on hidden tunnels for safety, only to have that sanctuary shattered by a savage raid that kills many—including the farm’s leader Lander. Devastated and isolated, Cora watches the community crumble and is forced to flee deeper into the labyrinthine tunnels. In the final moments, she finds herself alone in the darkness, desperate to find a way northward.
