The scene opens in a dimly lit kitchen and bedroom of the Elysian Fields boarding house, where Stanley, Mitch, Steve, and Pablo are playing a noisy poker game amid watermelon slices, whiskey, and bright electric lighting. The men argue over cards, make crude jokes, and trade insults. Stella and Blanche enter, with Stella introducing Blanche to the men and attempting to keep the women out of the game. Stanley dismisses the women, demanding they sit elsewhere, and the tension between him and Stella intensifies. Stanley slaps Stella’s thigh, provoking her outrage, and the men mock the incident.

Blanche, nervous and overheated, asks to use the bathroom and later engages in extended conversation with Mitch, revealing that she is an English teacher, an old maid, and that she has a “colored paper lantern” she wants placed over the light bulb. Mitch shares a sentimental story about a cigarette case inscribed with a Browning line, and they discuss sorrow, suffering, and the nature of love. Blanche also describes her sister Stella’s condition and her own arrival.

The poker game continues with loud music from a radio; Stanley repeatedly turns the music off and on, confronting Blanche’s presence. The men argue, trade barbs, and deal cards while the atmosphere grows increasingly hostile. Finally, Stanley erupts in violent rage, charging at Stella, knocking her down, and a physical brawl erupts with the men trying to restrain him. In the chaos, Stella is discovered to be pregnant (“my baby”) and pleads for help. The men finally subdue a drunken, bleeding Stanley, strip him of his wet underwear, and force him to the bathroom for a shower. He later emerges, sobbing, and frantically calls for his “baby,” mistakenly calling out for Stella. He hauls his phone repeatedly, demanding she come down, while Eunice from upstairs shouts at him to stop.

Eunice’s shouted threats lead to Stanley’s final outburst; he howls Stella’s name from the porch, and after a series of shouted exchanges, Stella, in a robe, descends the stairs with tears, and the two briefly embrace before collapsing together. Blanche, still in a robe, emerges from the upper landing, frantic for her sister, and encounters Mitch on the stairs. Mitch attempts to calm her, offering a cigarette and conversation about kindness, while Blanche remains shaken. The scene ends with Blanche’s terrified questioning of Stella’s whereabouts and Mitch’s attempts to soothe her.
