Footprint

Chapter 651,120 wordsCompleted

Snowman (Jimmy) rises before dawn on the beach, watches the tide and a strange rosy‑glow on the horizon, and reflects on the lingering beauty of the world despite past trauma. He checks a swollen, ulcerated foot wound, treats it with antibiotic gel, aspirin, and a Jolt‑bar, and readies his spray‑gun and cellpack of virtual bullets, feeling feverish and frightened.

He limps northward along the shoreline, staying in the shade of trees and using a stick for balance, while a thin column of smoke rises in the distance. He follows the smoke, hoping to find other humans who might know about the Crakers. Along the way he notices a series of human footprints of varying sizes in the sand, showing people removing and puttting on shoes at the water’s edge. He steps into the wet sand beside the largest imprint, watching it fill with water as he lifts his foot.

Approaching the source of the smoke, Snowman sees three emaciated CorpSeCorps personnel gathered around a fire: a brown‑skinned man, a white man, both in dirty tropical khakis, and a gaunt woman in the remnants of a uniform. They have a discarded spray‑gun on the ground and are roasting a small animal identified as a rakunk, the same creature Snowman once owned. The smell of the roasting meat triggers his fever and nostalgia.

Snowman debates how to approach them. He considers waving a white flag, offering treasure, threatening them, or killing them pre‑emptively. He recognizes he has nothing to trade and only himself, and worries they might attack, spy, or kill him. He also feels pity for their exhausted state and the humanity they may still possess. He whispers to himself, recalling “Jimmy” and urging himself not to fail.

He looks at his watch, which shows a blank face, interpreting the moment as “zero hour”. The chapter ends with Snowman poised to decide whether to seek peace or violence, his foot burning like liquid fire, and the weight of his choice hanging over him.
