The Pieces of Gods
The storm after Palm Sunday ruins the front yard: frangipani trees are uprooted, the satellite dish crashes, and Sisi shatters Mama’s china. Jaja stays locked in his room while the family eats; Yewande Coker arrives with her silent daughter, announcing that the child has finally spoken. The family gathers for Good Friday at St. Agnes Church, where Jaja and Kambili kiss the cross, and Papa weeps openly. Later, Aunty Ifeoma calls to tell Kambili that she has been given one month’s notice for “illegal activity,” has applied for a US visa, and that Father Amadi will leave for missionary work in Germany. Jaja insists they will go to Nsukka for Easter, regardless of transport. Kevin, a driver, eventually agrees to take them. The family packs and travels to Aunty Ifeoma’s flat in Nsukka, where they encounter chaotic domestic life: broken figurines, a kitchen fire from bleaching palm oil, heat, flies, and arguments over oil and visas. Amaka and Obiora discuss the upcoming visa interview; Amaka helps Kambili prepare ugali and garri. The children play on the verandah while rain pours and the flat fills with smoke. Father Amadi arrives, engages in uneasy conversations with Kambili, and later comforts her after a tense encounter; he kisses her hand, shares a flower, and promises to write to her. The family later joins Aunty Ifeoma on a pilgrimage to Aokpe, a rural site where an apparition of the Blessed Virgin is reported. Hundreds of pilgrims gather, witness flames and flowers, and the group returns home. Back at the flat, Aunty Ifeoma’s visa is finally approved; she plans to leave for Lagos and later the US, arranging money and transport for the family’s departure. Suddenly, a phone call delivers the shocking news that Papa has been found dead on his desk at his factory; autopsy reports poison. Mama calmly reveals she placed rat poison in his tea, claiming Sisi’s uncle is a witch doctor. Police arrive; Jaja confesses to the poisoning and is taken away for questioning.
