CHAPTER X

Victor spends a solitary day in the Alpine valley of the Arveiron glacier, finding brief solace in the sublime scenery of ice, avalanches, and mist. Determined to recapture the earlier ecstasy the glacier gave him, he climbs to the summit of Montanvert without a guide, describing the perilous, wind‑whipped ascent. From a rock overlooking the “sea of ice” he sees a superhuman figure moving across the glacier—his own Creature. Rage and horror seize Victor, and he hurls curses, vowing to destroy the being. The Creature, however, speaks calmly, pleading for Victor’s compassion, recounting his suffering, loneliness, and the injustice he endures, and demanding that Victor fulfill the duties of a creator. Victor rebuffs the appeal, insisting they are enemies, but his curiosity and a faint sense of responsibility compel him to at least hear the Creature’s tale. The Creature leads Victor across the ice to a mountain hut, where he lights a fire and prepares to recount his long, strange narrative, setting the stage for the forthcoming revelation of his experiences and the moral reckoning between creator and creation.
