ACT 1
Act 1 opens in the Helmers’ tastefully furnished living room on a winter evening. Nora enters cheerfully, bringing parcels and a Christmas tree, and jokes with Torvald about spending money, while he warns against reckless borrowing. She reveals she has obtained a large sum to fund a secret trip that saved Torvald’s health, but the loan was forged and must be repaid. Nora discusses her financial strain with Torvald, who dismisses her spending as frivolous and insists on control over the household’s finances.
A knock introduces Mrs. Linde, Nora’s former school friend, who arrives unexpectedly after years away. They reunite warmly; Mrs. Linde explains she is a widowed, childless woman forced by poverty to seek work. Nora promises to help her obtain a position with Torvald, hoping to secure Mrs. Linde’s employment at the bank.
Soon Krogstad, a bank clerk with a tarnished reputation, appears. He reminds Nora of the loan she forged, demanding that she use her influence over Torvald to keep his job at the bank. Nora refuses, claiming she has no influence, but Krogstad threatens to reveal the illegal loan unless she complies. He recounts the details of the bond signed in her father’s name, pointing out discrepancies that could expose fraud. Nora becomes desperate, realizing Krogstad could ruin both her and Torvald’s reputations.
The act concludes with Nora’s increasing anxiety as Krogstad leaves, children entering the room, and Torvald returning, unaware of the visitor. Nora attempts to maintain normalcy, dressing the Christmas tree and planning for the upcoming fancy‑dress ball, while silently fearing the impending scandal.
