Klara watches Josie’s health decline after the Morgan’s Falls trip; Josie becomes too weak to join the Mother for morning coffee. Melania Housekeeper orders Klara to go outdoors, and Klara reluctantly steps out, strolling past the grass mound where she met Rick, then through the fields to the picture‑frame gate and onto an informal trail that leads toward Mr McBain’s barn. While wandering she reflects on the Sun’s past help to Beggar Man and wonders why he has not yet granted special aid to Josie.
Several days later, Melania gives Klara an envelope containing a drawing Josie made for Rick. Klara walks back to Rick’s house, is greeted by Rick who opens the envelope, appreciates the picture, and discusses the vague “plan” that both children have spoken of. Their conversation reveals Rick’s frustration with his mother (Miss Helen), her controlling influence, and the fact that Miss Helen has warned Klara about an upcoming portrait session with a man named Mr Capaldi, calling him “Mr Capaldi’s son Bitch.” Miss Helen also mentions a “secret weapon” she believes can help Rick get into Atlas Brookings, a college that admits a few unlifted students.
Rick tells Klara he will try harder to gain admission to Atlas Brookings and that Miss Helen’s secret weapon may assist. He also agrees to deliver Josie’s picture himself if needed. The Mother later announces a city trip: she will drive Josie to Mr Capaldi’s studio for a portrait, and she wants Klara to accompany them as an observer because Mr Capaldi is interested in AFs. The trip will also include other passengers, notably Rick and Miss Helen.
Klara discusses the plan with Melania, who warns her sternly to keep a close eye on Josie and to watch for any wrongdoing by Mr Capaldi, threatening to dismantle Klara if she fails. Meanwhile, Rick’s visits to Josie’s bedroom become increasingly tense. The “bubble game” that once brought laughter now triggers arguments, especially over the “plan” and about Rick’s mother’s restrictions. Their relationship deteriorates, leading to a heated confrontation during a visit when Klara is present; Rick throws a picture at Josie, she reacts angrily, and he leaves the house in a storm of anger.
Following this, Rick stops visiting for several days. Klara offers to play the bubble game herself but Josie refuses, insisting only Rick can do it. Josie’s condition worsens, making Klara anxious that the Sun’s special help might finally arrive.
Later, Klara returns to the bedroom, finds Josie drawing and preparing an envelope with a picture intended for Rick. After a brief exchange, Josie asks Klara to deliver the envelope to Rick’s house. Klara agrees and sets out again, this time navigating the fields more confidently and reaching Rick’s home. Rick receives the envelope, opens it, and reacts positively to the picture, describing it as “kind.” Their conversation deepens; Rick reveals his mother’s reluctance to let him leave, his fear of loneliness, and his desire to prove himself by getting into Atlas Brookings. He also mentions that Miss Helen has arranged a contact (the “secret weapon”) who might pull strings for him.
Rick offers to guide Klara to Mr McBain’s barn, but she declines, stating the timing is now too late for Josie’s needs. He then suggests he can help her alone, offering to carry her to the barn. Klara climbs onto his back; they race through the grass, reach the barn, and inside she sits on a folded chair, watches the Sun’s rays, and attempts a silent plea for the Sun to grant Josie the same special nourishment given to Beggar Man. She argues that if she could locate and destroy the Cootings Machine that creates pollution, perhaps the Sun would help Josie. The Sun’s light wanes, and Klara leaves the barn, returning to the fields where Rick eventually lets her go.
Back at the house, Rick and Josie eventually reconcile: they resume the bubble game, share laughter, and apologize for previous harsh words. Rick promises to try harder for Atlas Brookings, and Josie acknowledges his support. The Mother confirms the city trip for Thursday, including the portrait session with Mr Capaldi, and the presence of Rick and Miss Helen as passengers. Melania reiterates her warning to Klara to observe carefully, especially if Mr Capaldi behaves badly, threatening to dismantle Klara should she cause harm to Josie.
