Klara observes Josie’s worsening condition eleven days after returning from the city: she experiences strange breathing, semi‑waking mornings with empty eyes, and prolonged sleep, while the Mother repeatedly chants “Josie, Josie, Josie” over her. Dr Ryan arrives each day, his smile gone, and the Mother and he hold long, closed‑door conversations in the Open Plan about whether to hospitalise Josie, ultimately agreeing that a hospital would only worsen her misery.
Rick, previously assisting Klara with his studies, loses interest as Josie’s health declines, lingering in the hall and watching her briefly before being dismissed. Klara convinces Rick to accompany her on a second walk to Mr McBain’s barn, meeting at a stone‑lined field at 7:15 pm. The garden’s grass is yellow and soft; they ride to the barn, where Klara steps out as the Sun sets behind the roof. Inside the barn she finds familiar objects—hay blocks, crooked red shelves, a broken blender, and the metal fold‑away chair—along with moving particles of light. She composes a desperate mental plea to the Sun, recalling past kindness to Beggar Man and pleading for nourishment for Josie, invoking Josie and Rick’s genuine love as a bargaining point. While speaking, she notices a triangle of Josie’s paperback protruding from shadows and various boxed displays from the former store.
At the rear of the barn she discovers a stack of seven glass sheets left by Mr McBain, each reflecting a different version of the Sun’s face. She gazes at them, repeats her plea, and watches the reflections fade as the Sun’s light leaves the barn.
Six days later, a dark, wind‑blown morning erupts; the sky turns black, wind rattles the house, and the household remains exhausted. The Mother and Melania are fatigued; Rick watches Josie, and Dr Ryan continues his visits. The Mother, in a thin black gown, confronts Rick about feeling like a “winner” after Josie’s gamble. Rick relays a message Josie left for her Mother, expressing unconditional love and gratitude.
Suddenly, Klara announces that the Sun is “coming out.” The Mother and Rick rush upstairs; in Josie’s bedroom the Sun’s intense orange patterns illuminate the walls, floor, and ceiling. Melania, initially trying to block the light by pulling blinds and curtains, is urged by Klara and Rick to open them. Once the curtains are drawn back, the Sun’s nourishment floods the room, bathing Josie in a half‑disc of orange light. Josie awakens, asks about the light, and after a brief struggle she sits up, appears slightly stronger, and converses with the Mother and Rick, noting dizziness but an overall feeling of improvement. The Sun’s light then fades as the sky darkens again.
