Bayar, still badly injured, drags himself forward with Panov and Erdene. The three discover a faint stone‑wall trail that Panov recognises as the historic “Bat road” spoken of by Professor Bat. The path weaves between high, sheer ridges that look like cattle‑shaped cliffs and a broad valley that opens onto a mist‑shrouded lake. They decide to follow the lake shore because it offers a clear view of the surroundings. After looping around a massive rock formation they emerge onto an ancient cracked road that appears abandoned for centuries. While traversing a narrow gorge a luminous, jelly‑like creature called an irves suddenly erupts from the shadows and strikes Bayar in the chest, knocking the breath from him. Panov and Erdene quickly pull Bayar back, splash him with the little water they have, and keep the irves at bay with makeshift spears and shouted commands. The water revives Bayar enough for him to regain consciousness; they lay him on a wide stone ledge, cover him with an old sheepskin and wait until his breathing steadies. The three share a brief moment of quiet camaraderie. Panov reflects on the Soviet‑Mongol friendship that has kept them alive, and Erdene stresses that mutual help is their only hope in this guide‑less, supply‑starved wilderness. They agree to stay together, press onward along the ancient track toward the western flank of Bichig Bogd, and continue searching for the luminous molybdenite vein Bayar had described.
