Chapter summary
3 DECEMBER - 14 HOURS, 50 MINUTES UNTIL DAWN
Jodie moves through a forest littered with dirty red leaves and dark‑brown mud, her shoes sinking and her balance uneven. She stays just behind Scott, whose hands are also cuffed and whose head is covered by a black bag that dulls his resolve. An inner voice constantly instructs her—focus on footing, observe the route, look after Scott, and compartmentalise problems one at a time. She recalls the earlier nightmare in the ambulance‑like van: the gag, the baby’s cries, the devil‑masked man, the drawing on the van’s side, and the violent threats. The voice had first appeared then, calming her panic.
In the woods, she notes a thick black tree trunk on a ridge, elephantine roots, and bright red darts pointing to it, promising she will remember it. The terrain is a series of mudslides, slick ground, and jutting trees that look like black antlers. The cold freezes her face; she attempts to generate heat by tensing and relaxing muscles.
The devil‑masked man, holding a thin cruel blade and a bag over Scott’s head, orders them forward, warning that “people in these woods will hurt you longer than I will.” He watches from behind his mask, one hand on the knife, the other on the bag’s shoulder strap. He does not help when Scott trips; a rock rolls down the slope, striking a tree with a gunshot‑like sound before settling among old stone remnants.
Scott stumbles, falls hard into the mud, and begins to cry. Jodie crouches, asks if he is ok, and helps him to his feet despite her own panic. She suppresses her own tears, reminding herself that only one of them may cry at a time. The voice warns her to be careful and quiet, noting hidden dangers in the woods. She brushes mud from Scott’s coat, which only spreads the filth.
The voice continues to reassure her, urging observation over fear, while Jodie’s mind drifts to myths of forbidden journeys, the River Styx, and Dante’s circles of Hell, concluding that the devil is leading them into a personal hell. She finally allows herself to weep, embodying the “one‑thing‑at‑a‑time” mantra. The chapter ends with Jodie and Scott continuing forward under the masked man’s watch, their fate hanging on each cautious step.
