Chapter summary

4 DECEMBER - 6 HOURS, 35 MINUTES UNTIL DAWN

At 12:45 a.m. the police convoy reaches the accident and emergency department. Greg, Mercer, Pete, Simon and Mark exit their vans into a snow‑covered car park, pass indifferent paramedics and enter a chaotic reception filled with waiting patients. After a brief exchange with a nurse, they are directed to Waiting Room Eleven. Inside the cramped room they wait for Doctor Li, who finally arrives in a black coat, sets up a clipboard and listens to their request about Scott Banks, the half‑naked man who ran from the woods. Li explains that Banks has been through emergency eye surgery, losing one eye, and suffers extensive burns, cuts, broken fingers and frostbite from running through the freezing woods. He describes the injuries as consistent with torture rather than subduing. Li states that Banks is still recovering from surgery and cannot be interviewed; he needs rest and privacy. Mercer presses for a room and a guard, which Li agrees to arrange. The team discusses the implications: the killer’s MO has shifted to abducting victims in the woods, and they have until dawn to locate Jodie McNeice before she is likely killed. Mercer decides to mobilise a search team, possibly with a helicopter and dogs, and to have Mark conduct the first interview with Banks once he is stable. He also orders a temporary base in the hospital for the detectives. The chapter ends with the detectives leaving the room, Mercer looking exhausted, and the team preparing to split up – Pete and Mark heading out to organise the search while the others stay behind.
