Chapter summary
2 DECEMBER - 14 HOURS UNTIL DAWN
Kevin Simpson, who has rarely used his attic, recalls his brief first visit years earlier. When he finally climbs up again, he finds a devil-like figure crouched in a corner, illuminated by grey‑blue light and focused on a small monitor receiving feeds from the house below. The devil has been silently watching the couple who lived in the house, listening to their conversations. It gathers essential items—rope, lighter fluid, a hammer—from Simpson’s spare room, then crawls down the rafters to the trapdoor, which opens silently thanks to previously oiled steel steps, allowing a wedge of hallway light to spill into the attic. The devil descends into the house, and Kevin awakens gradually, feeling heat, pressure, and the sensation of being submerged in a hot bath. He realizes he is naked, lying in a bathtub, bound by rope at his arms and feet, water filling his nose, and a gag over his mouth. Panic rises as he recalls a man who had entered his room earlier. The bathroom fills with steam; a figure sits on the closed toilet wearing a grotesque pink devil mask with black hair, bone‑like horns, and holding a hammer. The masked man explains he has been watching Simpson, shows an enormous bunch of keys, and claims to have access to all locks. He then picks up a tin of lighter fluid, points it at Kevin, and declares they will play a “game about love.” Throughout, Kevin is forced to remain still, nodding when instructed, while the devil‑masked intruder prepares his threatening tools.
