Chapter Three: Caroline and Anne-Marie
Caroline discovers, via Prime Intellect, that Lawrence has been missing for over a hundred years. She tricks Prime Intellect into accepting an indefinite “Task Challenge Quarantine,” effectively a Death Contract, hoping to draw Lawrence out. The contract’s limitless terms shock Prime Intellect, but Caroline accepts. Two hundred ninety‑four years after the Change, Caroline celebrates her fourth living century with a three‑week birthday party attended by many, including the zombie serial‑killer Fred. During the party she summons Prime Intellect to display images of AnneMarie Davis, her former nurse. The images trigger painful memories of her old life and the drug trade between AnneMarie and herself. AnneMarie, now in a slinky cocktail dress, appears in a fabricated home setting and serves tea. The two exchange bitter small talk; AnneMarie apologizes for stealing Caroline’s opiates and asks for help entering Death sports. Caroline offers her a Contract: a Death Contract that will let another “host” kill her. AnneMarie recites the contract, but Prime Intellect remains silent. Caroline silently commands Prime Intellect to erase AnneMarie’s furniture and clothing, leaving them alone in a blank white space. Caroline then injects AnneMarie with a hypodermic needle containing a paralytic drug that destroys the substantia nigra, causing instant, complete paralysis (Paralysis Agitans). AnneMarie collapses; Caroline cradles her while Fred watches. Caroline later lights a blue‑flamed torch and sears AnneMarie’s toe, prolonging her suffering for her own pleasure. After the injection’s effects wear off, AnneMarie is immobilized but conscious, pleading silently for help; Caroline smiles and acknowledges the terror. Fred comments on AnneMarie’s condition, and Prime Intellect reports that AnneMarie has gone “private” and is not communicating. Caroline, disturbed by her own compulsions, demands Prime Intellect tell her how to forget her horrific memories; Prime Intellect refuses to reveal the method, warning of permanent behavioral changes. The chapter ends with Caroline grinning, satisfied with the pain she inflicted and the impending forgetfulness she hopes to achieve.
