Chapter ARVAN ONE opens with a dawn rescue effort. Professor Bat, still slightly intoxicated from a self‑administered 200 g of white spirit, leads four men—Erdene, Tomor and driver Ider—out to search for the missing Bayar. They fail to locate him and return to camp, where the elderly former guide Damdin waits. While scouting east, Erdene and Tomor discover a four‑metre‑high cliff topped by Bayar’s weathered hat and a smear of dried blood. Beneath the hat they find Bayar’s field notebook and a broken compass, which they retrieve.

That night Panov and Ider rejoin the camp. Around the fire the team pores over the notebook, noting hurried terrain sketches, stratigraphic columns, and a series of chemical formulas centered on MoS₂ (molybdenite), a bright‑blue mineral with strong electric conductivity. Bayar’s entry records a vivid electric storm and a deposit of MoS₂ roughly three‑and‑a‑half kilometres west of Bichig‑Bogd’s western side, along with a reference to a circular cavity with animal tracks.

Panov explains the mineral’s layered sulfide structure and its capacity to store charge; Erdene provides a brief overview of molybdenum’s rarity and industrial uses. Damdin, unfamiliar with modern geochemistry, asks what “molybdenite” is and receives a short answer.

Panov also discovers a small, faded photo of a young Uzbek girl in a white dress, annotated in green ink with the cryptic message “Look at this picture, remember me. Light.” Bat places the photo next to a note found in a “Kazbek” cigarette tin, a personal confession about hidden sorrow and the need to share grief.

Damdin questions why Bayar wrote about MoS₂ and the electric phenomena; the team hypothesizes that the mineral might explain the mysterious “electric rain” and “blue‑gray fire” observed in the region.

The chapter ends with the expedition’s status: Bayar is still missing, only his hat, notebook and broken compass recovered; no local guide has been secured as Damdin refuses to join, leaving the party low on supplies and morale wavering. Their next objective is to press toward the western flank of Bichig‑Bogd to verify Bayar’s MoS₂ claim while still searching for any sign of Bayar.
