Chapter 16

Evie confronts Blade after he attempts to snatch a certificate from her. Their physical struggle ends with Blade accidentally slapping Evie’s cheek and both apologizing. Blade then asks Evie to “hit” him, but she refuses. Blade finally sits down and begins a confession: he never found a dragon egg while hiking; instead he grew up in the Gleaming City, the son of a royal political adviser. He lied about his origins to the Villain because his father’s position would have prevented him from taking the dragon. Blade explains he attended a court meeting where treasurers discussed selling a dragon egg, which he stole by posing as his father’s assistant, fled with the crate, and later approached the Villain, offering the egg in exchange for employment. He admits he never told the Villain where the egg came from. Blade reveals that interns have uncovered a sabotage plot against the Villain, which is why he feared being exposed. Evie listens, holds the letter, and decides she believes Blade but insists he must tell the Villain soon, threatening to do it herself. She tucks the employee letter into her dress pocket, warns Blade that she cannot “soften” the Villain, and leaves the room, hearing Blade mutter ominously, “You have no idea, do you?”
