Chapter 38

The chapter opens with Evie and The Villain riding in a quiet carriage. Evie asks to be dropped off far enough that Lyssa won’t see them. As the carriage moves, Evie spots a lone, masked figure wearing King Benedict’s emblem in the woods. She leaps from the carriage, sprints after the figure, and collides with the masked person, wrestling them to the ground. Evie removes the mask, revealing the face of Becky, an intern‑turned‑spy. Becky explains she stole the mask from an intern, hoping it would let her pose as guard and infiltrate the Gleaming Palace to obtain a cure for the “Mystic Illness.” She admits the cure may not exist but she was desperate to help her ailing grandmother. Evie confesses her own father suffers from the same illness. The Villain, who has been watching, remains calm and questions Becky’s motives. Becky claims she intended to hand the mask to him, but the intern frightened her into keeping it. She also mentions a map of the palace’s route and a plan to hitch a ride into the palace. The Villain acknowledges the rumor of a cure, says he will retrieve it if solid proof emerges, and shows a brief moment of respect toward Becky. After a tense exchange, Becky tosses the mask to The Villain, who pockets it. The three share a brief, uneasy apology for each other’s family illnesses. They part with a mutual agreement to never discuss the incident again, sealing the secret as they return to the carriage and head back to the manor.
