Chapter 47

After the battle, Evie and the Villain, both blood‑stained and wounded, fashion a makeshift torch from a magical light and set out to locate the knights who seized Arnold. Their search leads them to a trail of hoof prints and human footprints, confirming that their horse has been stolen along with other companions.

Deep in the woods they encounter Becky, disheveled and frantic. Becky explains that a guvre’s noise attracted the guards, who took the core healer on two horses; she was thrown from her own mount. Evie attempts to pursue, but the Villain grabs her waist, insisting that a single assistant cannot face several trained guards. Their tense interaction is observed by Becky, who comments on the lingering kiss between Evie and the Villain.

A further rustle reveals Clare, the Villain’s sister. Clare reports that she captured a guvre tangled in a tree and that the creature’s leaves are more potent when enchanted. She summons a caller’s crystal, orders a cart, and points out Blade’s location. When pressed about their father, Trystan (the Villain) reveals his father has been taken and mistakenly identified as the Villain. Clare erupts, striking Trystan and demanding, “What if he dies?” He vows his father will survive.

The Villain promises to procure horses, stays with Blade until the Malevolent Guards arrive, and returns with two horses. He declares the group will spend the night at the manor. Clare mechanically mounts a horse, takes Becky, and the Villain lifts her onto his own mount. Evie asks about Becky’s safety; the Villain reassures her that “Evil never dies.”

Evie expresses a desire to stay, but acknowledges she must return to her family. The Villain hoists her onto the second horse, warns her to be careful, and remarks that villains are not adept at saving people. As he departs into the night, Evie rides home, hearing Becky mutter “Fools. All of you,” and reflects on the pull between her world and the Villain’s, fearing it may eventually tear her apart.
