Chapter 51

Evie endures a grueling dagger‑training session with Tatianna supervising; after many attempts she nearly stands upright with the blade inches from her, marking a significant improvement over her initial helplessness. Tatianna declares it time to rest, lights a small stove, and begins mixing a newly discovered pain‑potion from old tomes. She offers the potion to Evie’s father, who suffers from a “Mystic Illness,” and hands Evie a pink vial intended to ease his suffering.

While Evie rests, Clare (Clarissa), the Villain’s sister, sits beside her, apologizing for her earlier coldness and explaining her involvement in the Villain’s affairs. Clare confesses she once unintentionally aided King Benedict, despises Trystan’s (the Villain’s) vendetta, and describes how she came to possess a jar of blue magical ink. She reveals that any drop of this ink can instantly reproduce any word ever written with it, effectively “revealing the truth” until the ink is exhausted. The ink’s primary use is in copying written material in offices, though Clare teases about pixies losing their jobs because of it.

Clare recounts how she first received the ink after Trystan became the Villain, noting a “hard day” when she was forced into the role. She also mentions that she sold a jar of the blue ink to a Valiant Guard client named Lark Moray. When Tatianna finishes the potion, she offers Evie the pink vial for her father and asks if Evie would like more of the blue ink. Evie, intrigued, accepts the offer, pocketing several vials before leaving.

Before departing, Evie kisses Tatianna’s cheek in gratitude, thanks Clare for the conversation, and receives a sympathetic glance from the Villain’s sister as she gathers her cloak and exits the cramped, herb‑filled room, her pockets now holding both the pink pain‑relief vial and several bottles of the mysterious blue ink.
