Chapter 60

After the battle, Evie Blood sprays blood on her face as the fallen opponent’s body hits the ground. The dagger in her hand pulses, relieving her pain, and she smiles at it. One knight yells “You witch!” but is slain when a massive sword pierces him, wielded by a second knight whose face is hidden behind a silver helmet. This silent knight thrusts the sword through his comrade, then, without speaking, assesses Evie, gives her a final glance, and quickly rides away on a horse.

Evie spots a strip of Trystan’s torn shirt on the grass, realizes he has been taken, and is overwhelmed with grief. She clutches the shirt, the dagger pulses again, and she resolves to rescue him. She returns to Massacre Manor, alerts the guards, and rushes up the stairs. Inside, she checks on Lyssa, who is asleep with Blade’s small knitted dragon, then retreats to a hallway where she breaks down, crying until her sobs turn to anger.

Later, after bathing and changing, Evie walks the stone corridor, admires her red lipstick and unbound hair, and orders Marvin to “Lift it higher.” Becky appears, looking lost, and Evie promises to bring Trystan back, urging Becky to “kill me.” Becky smiles and jokes about the request. Marvin announces “All done, Ms. Sage!” as a severed head—Otto Warsen’s—hangs from the opulent ceiling, eyes frozen in fear.

Stepping back, Evie descends toward the dungeon, quietly vowing to save The Villain (Trystan) or become a villain herself. The chapter ends with her stepping onto the stairs leading down, determined, while the narrative notes the story is “The End…for now.”
