4 DECEMBER - 1 HOUR UNTIL DAWN

Jodie Careful, handcuffed in a cold stone storeroom, fidgets with a broken iRiver headphone. She cuts a metre of cable from the headphone, leaving a solid plastic curl at the end. While watching the sleeping man through the spy‑hole, she notices a thin black line on the door—a hidden lock. She pushes the headphone head through the spy‑hole, threads the cable through, and slowly feeds it until the tension dislodges the lock’s hook, producing a tiny screech of metal. The door swings open, revealing a clearing about fifteen metres wide, a dying fire, a nearby stone building, and footprints leading toward the tree line. The fire crackles, a cold breeze blows, and Jodie feels a surge of urgency to rescue Scott, who is still captive elsewhere. She moves toward the fire, picks up a half‑metre‑long, sharp piece of wood that is blackened and glowing red in places, and notices a bottle of lighter fluid half‑full, shielded by a stone column. As she does so, a figure in a devil mask emerges from the trees about ten metres away, holding a knife and staring at her. Jodie, still handcuffed, holds the wood and fluid together, unable to run. The masked captor steps hesitantly toward her, and she backs toward the stone building, preparing to defend herself despite her restraints.
