Chapter summary

4 DECEMBER - 2 HOURS, 40 MINUTES UNTIL DAWN

At 4:40 a.m. on 4 December, DI Alan White confronts John Mercer in the department’s control room. White, visibly furious, demands to know why Mercer has been working on a home‑invasion case without his knowledge and accuses him of bypassing the chain of command. Mercer attempts to explain the link to the 50/50 Killer and the death of Andrew Dyson, but White dismisses him, orders the search teams to withdraw from the woods, and declares that Geoff Hunter will now take over the operation. White tells Mercer to go home, citing the blizzard and Mercer's emotional state. Mercer protests, but White remains unmoved. The narrator (Mark) activates his webcam so White can see the feed, then contacts Detective Nelson, who is instructed to prepare a written report for Detective Sergeant Geoff Hunter summarising the day’s events.

After the tense exchange, the office falls silent. Mercer sits back, appears resigned, and receives a ringing phone from his wife, which he lets go to voicemail. The narrator tries to comfort him, but Mercer is preoccupied.

A few minutes later a new, nervous officer appears on the video link. He informs the team that Detective Dwyer has been attacked in the woods. The officer can only confirm that Dwyer has been stabbed and that a helicopter has been called to the scene. Mercer jumps up, demands a car to reach Dwyer, and rushes out of the room, ordering the vehicle to meet him outside. The chapter ends with Mercer heading to the woods to attend to the injured detective while the rest of the team processes the sudden escalation.
