4 DECEMBER - 2 HOURS, 25 MINUTES UNTIL DAWN

Jodie, still handcuffed and blinded, counts the songs on her iRiver player to gauge time, reaching song 92 before the device abruptly powers down. She estimates that roughly six hours have passed since the man in the devil mask first entered the storehouse. Physical discomfort intensifies: her back aches, her right leg cramps, and both hands burn when she rubs them. She attempts to rise, steadies herself, and shuffles toward the heavy door, finding a small gap at its edge. Pressing her eye to the opening, she spies the captor lying on a blanket beside a dwindling campfire about ten metres from her, his mask covering his face and his legs slightly curled, giving the impression that he is sleeping. She notes the pattern of his footprints in the ash and remembers seeing him earlier fetch a screwdriver from the fire. The firelight flickers, revealing the stone walls and the empty door outline. Jodie’s internal voice urges her to keep thinking; she backs away, sits on the rocks, and forces herself to stay strong, aware that breaking the door would awaken the masked man and likely result in further torture. She resolves to endure until a chance to escape presents itself.
