CHAPTER SIX
General Szilard meets Lieutenant Jane Sagan in the mess under the crystal dome, informing her that the Kite’s new recruit, Private Jared Dirac, contains Charles Boutin’s brain pattern. Szilard worries Dirac may become a security risk but also a source of valuable intelligence, and asks Sagan to handle him. Sagan objects, citing possible traitorous tendencies, and requests a human‑brain specialist; Szilard directs her to Administrator Cainen, a captured Rraey.
Cainen, speaking in broken English and Ckann, explains that the brain is hardware, consciousness is a file, and memory is the software needed to run the file. He argues Dirac’s brain lacks the software to activate Boutin’s consciousness, and that any latent pattern would likely have dissipated. He offers to help if given a lab, but remains skeptical about the utility of the boutin file.
The Kite, employing its Skip Drive, jumps from orbit to within a light‑second of a Rraey cruiser near the human colony Gettysburg. The ship fires two rail‑gun projectiles that pierce the cruiser; the first fragments explosively, creating a shotgun‑like spread, the second breaches an engine. The Kite follows with six tactical nuclear missiles, destroying the cruiser and a Skip‑drone it launches. The crew then proceeds to the planet’s surface for a reconnaissance and “sweep‑and‑clean” mission.
On the ground, Lieutenant Sagan commands the 2nd Platoon, made up of new Special Forces recruits including Jared Dirac, Daniel Harvey, Alex Roentgen, Sarah Pauling, Julie Einstein, and others. Their orders are to locate and eliminate any remaining Rraey forces while minimizing damage to the wildcat settlement. Tensions rise among the soldiers as they argue about the legality of wildcat colonists, but Sagan shuts down the debate and the transport descends into Gettysburg’s atmosphere.
During the sweep, the platoon splits into pairs. Jared and Sagan engage a small group of Rraey soldiers in a building; they kill two and chase a third into a motor‑pool garage. In the garage, the Rraey attacks Jared with knives, a rod, and an Empee (a nanobot‑enhanced rifle). Jared’s unitard stiffens with nanofiber, preventing cuts, but he is repeatedly knocked down, suffers broken fingers, a shattered cheek, and a facial wound. He uses the SmartBlood in his bloodstream to ignite on the Rraey’s face, then fires his Empee to finish the creature. Sagan rescues a bloodied Jared, noting his injuries and urging him to get medical help.
The squad then discovers the colonists’ slaughterhouse. Inside, they find bodies hanging on hooks, offal barrels, and a cold room filled with the remains of settlers, including a pile of children’s corpses. Einstein and Sagan order an inventory of records to identify the victims, while Jared is overwhelmed by the sight of a small girl’s frozen face.
After the combat, the platoon celebrates with a mass orgy, describing it as “integration” through shared sexual activity. The event includes almost all members except Sagan, who stays away due to a prior near‑death experience. Jared participates, later receiving affection from Pauling and teasing from Roentgen. The celebration is framed as a way to cement neural integration among the soldiers.
In a final debrief, Sagan asks Dirac what he thought of his first mission. Dirac replies it was “awful.” Sagan informs him that the wildcat settlement’s leader is the Secretary of State’s son, whose political gamble put the colonists in Rraey‑controlled space. She tells Dirac the son, his wife, and daughter were all slaughtered. The chapter ends with Sagan warning Dirac to stay alert, especially as the conflict with the Rraey and Eneshan continues.
