CHAPTER SEVEN
Jane Sagan’s briefing over the encrypted channel sets the tone: “Thirty klicks, everyone off the bus.” The 2nd Platoon exits the troop‑transport at 30 km altitude, the night sky over Dirluew alive with Chafalan fireworks. Three low‑orbit repair‑tugs, secretly modified to fire particle beams, fire three columns toward the Hierarch’s Palace. The first beam, the strongest, severs the main power line and destroys the backup generator; the second, a wide, super‑heated beam, incinerates the administrative wing; the third, a low‑power, flickering beam, cuts a narrow shaft straight into the palace’s nursery floor, leaving a clean 80‑yard‑deep hole.
The platoon’s mission—kidnap the newly consecrated heir, Vyut Ser—is debated in a tense briefing. Sagan volunteers, recruits Dirac, Roentgen, Pauling, Harvey, and others. After a brief exchange about the morality of abducting a child, Sagan declares the operation necessary to break the Eneshans psychologically.
Using previously implanted C. xavierii movere bacteria, the team already possesses a detailed interior map of the palace. Jared Dirac, guided by his BrainPal, lands on the roof, deploys his nanobot‑enabled glider, and rappels with Sagan and Pauling down to the residential apartments. Eneshan guards converge; the squad fights hand‑to‑hand, killing several while the nanobot‑reinforced unitards protect the soldiers from debris.
Inside the nursery, they encounter the hierarch’s consort, Jahn Hio, who is slain by the platoon. The infant heir is found—a pre‑metamorphic, maggot‑like creature screaming. Sagan secures the heir in a sling, but first she injects the infant’s two reproductive sacs with a nanobot‑filled syringe, burning the tissues and rendering the heir sterile. The infant’s scream echoes as the procedure completes.
As the team extracts, they are ambushed. Julie Einstein and Sarah Pauling are hit; Einstein’s Empee goes silent, and Pauling is mortally wounded while passing the sling. Sagan’s right arm is shattered, leaving her partially disabled. The remaining squad members rappel down, fire on incoming Eneshan reinforcements, and pull the sling with the sterile heir into the transport. The transport lifts off amid heavy fire, leaving the palace in flames.
Sagan establishes a live visual and audio link with the Hierarch. Through a translation device, she delivers a hard‑line ultimatum: the Colonial Union will not surrender; she threatens to expose the palace’s destruction, demands the hierarch cease the war, supply a new consort of Union choosing, and threatens to inform all matriarchs of the heir’s sterility. The Hierarch, distraught, oscillates between rage and pleading, ultimately agreeing to Sagan’s terms under duress.
Following the negotiation, Sagan orders Dirac to finish the heir. Dirac draws his combat knife, but at the last moment Sagan snatches the blade and raises it herself. Dirac steps back, the infant’s cries cease, and the chapter ends on the ambiguous, brutal tableau of Sagan poised to kill the sterile heir she has just captured.
