CHAPTER NINE

Colonel James Robbins and General Szilard meet in the general’s mess. Szilard tells Robbins about four recent Special Forces cruiser disappearances, suspecting the Obin. He explains the plan to use Private Dirac (Jared) as a psychological probe in the Omagh system, which is now patrolled by the Obin, to retrieve Bouton‑related memories. Szilard offers a tiny Skip‑Drive sled (“chariot”) as the insertion vehicle and instructs Robbins to let Dirac go, warning of the risk.

Later, Harry Wilson and Jared Dirac board the sled in the cargo hold of the ship Shikm. Wilson explains the sled’s design: a carbon‑fiber basket, two ion engines, and a miniature Skip‑Drive that can fire from a Lagrange point. Jared straps into a vacuum‑rated unitard, programs the destination to the L4 point between Phoenix and its moon Benu, and activates the sled. The Skip‑Drive translates the sled into the ring system surrounding the planet Omagh and brings them to the abandoned Covell Research Station, which orbits a planetary ring.

At the station, they encounter a trio of rock‑like beings with limbs and photosensitive surfaces—later identified by their voice as “Martin” and explained to be “Gamerans,” space‑adapted humans engineered to live in vacuum. Martin explains their biology, reproduction, and combat role against the Obin, and introduces his companions Stross and Pohl. The Gamerans tow the sled into the station through a ring opening.

Inside Covell, the team finds the station largely intact but airless, with some systems still powered. They locate a dead body (Uptal Chatterjee) and discover a drawer containing a drawing signed by Zoë Boutin, Charles Boutin’s daughter, and a Babar the Elephant toy that belonged to her. The artifacts trigger intense, fragmented memories in Jared of Boutin’s family, his daughter’s death, and the emotional trauma that led to Boutin’s betrayal.

Jared explores the station, finding Boutin’s laboratory, a damaged weapons wing, and his personal quarters with more memories of his wife Cheryl, their lost child, and the circumstances of her death. He relives the moment Boutin decided to betray humanity after his daughter’s death, gaining a clearer picture of Boutin’s motive.

While traversing the station, an Obin scout craft arrives. The Gamerans and Jared engage the scout; Martin uses tow cables and organic arms to wrestle the craft, and Wilson’s hidden weapons destroy it. The battle yields heavy damage to the station’s hull but the sled, Jared, and Martin escape through the ring.

Back on the Shikm, Wilson debriefs Jared, confirming the success of the infiltration and the retrieval of critical memory fragments about Boutin’s betrayal. Jared declares he now understands why Boutin turned traitor, setting up the next phase of the Special Forces’ plan against the Obin and the wider three‑race conflict.
