Chapter Forty-Four

Chapter 441,406 wordsCompleted

Offred enjoys a ordinary lunch of cheese sandwich, milk, celery and canned pears and then goes shopping. She sees Nick washing the car and avoids eye contact. Waiting for Ofglen at the corner, she is surprised to find a thinner woman with a beige face who introduces herself as “Ofglen.” Offred attempts to probe her, asking about Ofglen’s recent transfer and mentioning “May Day.” The new Ofglen answers tersely, insisting she is Ofglen and remaining guarded.

Together they go to Milk and Honey and then All Flesh, buying chicken and three pounds of hamburger, exchanging the usual minimal nods with other women they recognize. Offred suggests they go to the Wall. At the Wall they see three women who were hanged that morning, still in their dresses, white bags over their heads, arms stiff at their sides, the colours of their shrouds faded. The new Ofglen says, “Let that be a reminder to us.” Offred replies “Yes,” uncertain whether the reminder is of the regime’s cruelty or a warning to obey.

On the way back, Offred holds back her curiosity, then admits she didn’t know the former Ofglen well, mentioning May. The new Ofglen questions the term “May Day,” warns Offred about “echoes,” and hints that she is being cautioned. Offred feels a cold shiver, realizing the woman may be warning her that she is not an ally.

At the final checkpoint they exchange the customary farewell, “Under His Eye,” and the new Ofglen leans forward, bringing her pale beige eyes close. In a brief, hushed whisper she tells Offred, “She hanged herself… after the Salvaging. She saw the van coming for her. It was better.” She then walks away, leaving Offred unsettled, fearing that the original Ofglen has been caught and that the new one may be an informant.
