CHAPTER 29 - The Fate of the Master and Margarita is Decided

At sunset a stone terrace atop a beautiful Moscow house overlooks the sprawling city. Woland, seated on a folding stool in his black soutane, holds a sword planted as a sundial; Azazello stands nearby, also dressed in black. Woland muses on the city’s magnificence, noting a fire on Griboedov Boulevard, and wonders about Koroviev and Behemoth’s presence.

A rag‑clad, clay‑streaked man in a chiton—Matthew Levi, formerly a tax collector—appears unexpectedly. Woland mocks his arrival, and a sharp debate ensues about shadows, evil, and the nature of good. Levi declares he comes on behalf of “He” (the Master), claiming the Master’s work has been read and demanding that the Master be taken with him and granted peace, and that Margarita, the Master’s lover, also be taken. Woland, unmoved, tells Levi that nothing is hard for him, but asks why the Master should not be taken into the light. Levi replies the Master deserves peace, not light, and pleads for Margarita’s inclusion. Woland consents, instructs Azazello to “fly to them and arrange it all,” and Levi vanishes.

Soon after, Koroviev and Behemoth stride onto the terrace, laden with a small gold‑framed landscape, a half‑burnt cook’s smock, and a whole salmon. They are singed by fire, their mugs blackened, and they report the chaotic scene at Griboedov’s: gunshots, a blaze that consumed the building, their frantic attempts to rescue items, and Koroviev’s claim of assisting firemen. Woland listens, critiques their “looting,” and declares that they have done all they could. He stands, looks toward the horizon, then sits again and announces there are no further orders; they may rest as a great storm approaches.

A black cloud gathers in the west, swallowing the sun. The air cools, darkness spreads, covering the city, erasing bridges and palaces as if they never existed. A single fiery thread streaks across the sky, thunderclaps echo, and the storm intensifies. Woland fades from view as the gloom deepens, leaving the city shrouded in total darkness.
