CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Boutin welcomes Zara’s daughter Zoë into a sealed “box” and introduces her to Jared, a copy of Boutin’s consciousness who is in a dormant state. Zoë, confused but trusting, says goodbye as Boutin explains that the Obin rescued her during the Rraey assault on Covell, killing the Rraey but slaughtering other civilians; the Obin kept Zoë because they found Boutin’s research on consciousness and saw value in his daughter’s existence. Boutin then launches into a philosophical exposition on the Obin, describing them as an engineered race lacking true self‑awareness, ego, or art, and arguing that their perfect cooperation makes them ideal soldiers. He claims he intends to give them consciousness (“souls”) to destabilize them and use them in a war against the Colonial Union.

The scene shifts to Lieutenant Jane Sagan, Daniel Harvey, and Seaborg at a fortified perimeter dotted with automated gun emplacements. They experiment by throwing rocks and a small live creature at the guns, discovering the weapons track only within a limited elevation angle. Determined to bypass the defenses, the trio locates a tall, flexible Aristian “tree” and devises a human‑launch method. Harvey attempts to hurl the creature at the gun but aborts; Sagan and Seaborg climb the tree while Harvey carries the dead body of Wigner. They balance Wigner’s corpse on the bent trunk and release, using the tree’s elastic recoil to fling themselves over the guns. Wigner’s body is caught in the firing zone and is instantly pulverized; Sagan survives the launch, lands in the meadow, sustains a cracked rib, and escapes the immediate blast radius. While fleeing she encounters two Obin in a small armed hover‑craft. Sagan seizes one Obin, uses its own body as a shield and projectile, and after a brutal melee disables the hover‑craft, commandeering it and driving it past the gun line.

Back on the ground, Sagan engages in a fierce close‑quarters battle with additional Obin soldiers, using the captured weapon to defeat them and ultimately turning the hover‑craft against its own fleet, forcing the remaining Obin to retreat. The narrative then returns to Boutin, who continues his diatribe about the Colonial Union’s exploitation of Earth, the secret Conclave of hundreds of species, and his own ambition to spark a galaxy‑wide war. He outlines a covert plan to infect CDF soldiers’ BrainPal implants with a time‑release virus, leveraging the fact that the Special Forces are uniquely dependent on the BrainPal. He explains that he needs a carrier for the virus, and that Jared—bearing Boutin’s recorded consciousness—will serve that purpose. Boutin details how earlier attempts to spread the virus failed because the BrainPal lacks an upload back‑door, but with Jared’s hybrid mind he could insert the code and trigger a mass collapse of CDF command.

Finally, after Sagan’s skirmish, the scene returns to Boutin and Jared. Boutin informs Jared that the recording of his consciousness is finished, referencing earlier discussions about consciousness transfer, the virus, and the impending war. He taunts Jared about the future transfer, hinting that Jared’s mind will soon be overwritten or further integrated, setting the stage for the next phase of the Obin‑Conspiracy.
