CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Harvey, Seaborg and Lieutenant Jane Sagan crouch at the forest edge of the Obin science station, reviewing their three‑person plan. Harvey is assigned to draw the Obin’s attention in the mess hall; Seaborg must cut power at the generator building; Sagan will enter the central laboratory to secure Dr. Charles Boutin and, if necessary, kill Lieutenant Dirac.

The team moves forward. Harvey steals a hovercraft, crashes into the mess hall, fires its gun, and slams an Obin into the wall, shouting “The 2nd Platoon sends its regards!” His chaotic assault forces the Obin soldiers at the generator to abandon their posts. Seaborg, limping, storms the generator shed, fires at the massive battery, rupturing a high‑pressure green gas line. He ignites the escaping gas, causing a massive blast that knocks Sagan down, shatters the science station’s windows and temporarily restores her BrainPal integration.

After the blast, Sagan races into the laboratory, finds Boutin and a lone Obin, and is ordered by Boutin to begin the consciousness transfer. She refuses to be drugged, keeping herself conscious for the procedure. Boutin explains that the transfer will kill Jared Dirac (the current host) but will save Boutin’s mind. He offers a sleep directive, which Sagan declines. A loud gun‑like noise erupts outside; the Obin launch a rapid‑fire weapon that hits the lab, injuring both Boutin and the Obin assistant. The power fails, emergency lights flicker, and the lab’s backup generator kicks in.

During the chaos, Sagan integrates with the dying Dirac (Jared) via a BrainPal link, learning that he is the “Jared Dirac” of the Colonial Defense Forces. She relays Boutin’s orders to retrieve Zoë, his daughter, and to secure the capture pod. Sagan decides to leave Boutin alive for now, hoping the Obin will protect him, but threatens to kill him if needed. She instructs Jared to tell Zoë that “Mr. Jared” will soon pick her up.

A massive external explosion—described as a “very large gun going off very rapidly”—shakes the station. Harvey, hearing the roar, continues his destructive rampage, destroying more Obin, while Seaborg fights his way through the generator room, attempting to keep the power down.

Eventually the blast knocks Boutin, the Obin, and Jared’s crèches to the floor. Jared awakens, hears Dirac’s voice asking questions, and realizes Boutin plans to transfer his consciousness into Jared’s body, effectively erasing Jared. He argues with Boutin, demanding the end of the virus plan, and Boutin continues the transfer.

Later, an Obin arrives with a weapon, and Sagan, now holding the captured Zoë, fights the Obin with a two‑handed weapon, killing it after three ammunition bursts. She and Harvey flee in a hovercraft, Harvey piloting, with Zoë secured in his arms. Harvey insists on staying behind, but Sagan convinces him to leave with Zoë, promising to retrieve the capture pod later.

Back in the lab, Boutin wakes in the newly‑transferred body (the genetically grown Special Forces soldier), confused but alive. He discovers a hidden voice message from the original Jared Dirac, warning that Boutin’s SmartBlood contains a nanobot “combustion” program that will kill him. The message also confirms Jared’s death and instructs Sagan to secure Zoë.

Sagan receives the voice note, shares it with Harvey, and they discuss sending a capture pod for Zoë. Harvey, still exhilarated by the combat, refuses to return, planning to loiter until the Union can drop a rock on the base. Sagan agrees to send a pod for the child and urges Harvey to retrieve data from Boutin’s lab before they leave.

In the final moments, Zoë, now in the capture pod, asks when her “daddy” will come. Sagan comforts her, tells her to hold on, and the pod launches, leaving the station amid lingering combat and an uncertain fate for the remaining characters.
