CHAPTER FIFTEEN

General Mattson, General Szilard, and Colonel Robbins meet in the mess, where Mattson orders a huge plate of spaghetti for Robbins and berates an outraged colleague. The trio discusses the recent BrainPal breach: Robbins reports that the back‑door has been closed, a priority upgrade has been pushed, a full code audit for legacy back‑doors is underway, and virus‑checking of BrainPal communications has been instituted to block attacks like Boutin’s. Szilard presses Mattson about Lieutenant Sagan, accusing her of knowing too much about the Conclave‑Counter‑Conclave war. Mattson admits Sagan’s term is ending and suggests retiring her by posting her to a new colony, using her attachment to John Perry (a CDF soldier) and orphan Zoë Boutin as leverage. They also touch on the lack of any real negotiations with the Obin, noting only that no deals are being made.

Later, Lieutenant Sagan is brought to Cainen, who reveals that the recorded consciousness of Jared Dirac is in a containment device. Cainen asks Sagan what should be done with it. After a brief debate, Sagan orders the recording erased, concluding that Dirac did not consent to be revived.

Cainen then reveals his personal crisis: the antidote that keeps him alive is fading, he is in constant pain, and he wishes to die by seppuku. He explains the ritual, requests Sagan to act as his kaishakunin, and cites written permission from General Mattson and General Szilard for the act. Sagan initially balks, citing CDF rules, but after Cainen’s insistence she agrees to be his second. Harry Wilson, after a tense exchange, also volunteers to be a second, promising to assist Cainen when the time comes.

A month later, after Zoe and Sagan return to Phoenix Station, Sagan takes Zoe on a shuttle to the gravestone of Zoe’s parents. Lieutenant Cloud pilots the shuttle and asks about Jared; Sagan tells him Jared is dead, prompting Cloud to recount Jared’s jokes. At the grave, Zoe reads her parents’ names, asks if her father is really gone, and Sagan comforts her, explaining that Jared died on Arist and that she himself knew him only faintly. Sagan then proposes that Zoe join her on a new colony, where she would live with Sagan, John Perry (who is being fast‑tracked to early discharge to be with Zoe), and herself, forming a family unit. Zoe reacts enthusiastically, and they end the scene planning to eat together.
