Chapter Thirty-One

Chapter 322,840 wordsCompleted

Offred opens the chapter by describing how each night she hopes the next morning will return her to her old house, but the hope never materializes. She chronicles the endless summer—July’s heat, her dwindling energy, and the physical sense of her body aging into a fragile, calcium‑poor state. She marks time by lunar cycles and imagines she might appreciate things more as she nears the end of her life, though she also calls herself sentimental.

She recounts a recent trip with Ofglen to the church and the Wall. At the Wall they see only two hanging bodies; one is marked with a red “J” that does not denote “Jew” but is an unknown identifier. Ofglen explains that the bodies are of a Catholic (not a priest) and another sect, and she mentions how the regime once offered Jews a choice to convert or emigrate, describing televised footage of a boatload of Jews attempting to look authentic.

Returning from the Wall, Ofglen and Offred find a secluded spot and speak in low whispers, describing their conversation as a “telegram” or “verbal semaphore.” Ofglen reveals that there is a secret password used within the underground resistance: “Mayday.” She says she tried it on Offred once, and warns that it should only be used in emergencies because it could expose them.

Offred then walks alone to the house where she encounters Nick, whose hat is askew. He passes by without acknowledging her, having just finished polishing the “Whirlwind” car. She proceeds to the garden where Serena Joy is sitting under a willow, knitting, smoking, and drinking tea or coffee. Serena asks Offred to come over, tells her to sit, and hands her a skein of damp, grey wool to hold. Serena explains that the wool will keep Offred’s hands moisturized, describing it as “lanolined.” While they knit, Serena remarks that she wishes Offred would become pregnant, suggesting that Offred’s pregnancy would solve a problem for her. Serena hints that the Commander may be unable to impregnate her and proposes that Offred use Nick to become pregnant, offering to arrange it covertly. Offred hesitates, recalling the law against such acts and the risk of death, yet the conversation continues with Serena offering to help secure a doctor or Nick, and to conceal the pregnancy from the Commander.

Serena then asks Offred to hold the wool for a moment longer, lifts the cigarette from her mouth, and hands it to Offred, instructing her to find a match in the kitchen from Rita, specifying that only one match should be taken. The chapter ends with Serena’s cryptic, slightly amused command, “Find yourself a match,” implying a secretive, possibly dangerous collaboration between the two women.
