Chapter Thirty-Three

Chapter 342,021 wordsCompleted

Offred walks with Ofglen through the streets to the district Prayvaganza. They pass a modern building draped with a banner “WOMEN’S PRAYVAGANZA TODAY” that covers the name of a dead President, and a smaller line reading “GOD IS A NATIONAL RESOURCE” framed by winged eyes. Four Guardians stand at the entrance, each with a submachine gun. Inside the covered courtyard, ranks of wooden chairs face a skylit space; the upper gallery holds Wives and high‑ranking women, while the lower gallery is for Marthas and Econowives. Offred and the other Handmaids are led to a scarlet rope that separates them from the audience, forced to kneel on the cement floor in rows. While kneeling they hear a susurrus of whispers that serve as a covert news‑exchange network.

From their position Offred sees Janine enter the enclosure with a new partner. Janine appears gaunt, her red dress hanging thin, and her face is pallid. Ofglen whispers that Janine’s baby was “a shredder,” that the baby had been called Angela, and that Janine has now suffered a second miscarriage—an eighth‑month loss—after an earlier one. Ofglen explains that Janine’s recent transfer may be due to complications with her breast milk, implying she may have resisted giving it up. The two women exchange brief, stunned reactions to Janine’s double tragedy.

The narrative then jumps back to an earlier morning in the Red Center. Janine is still in her white cotton nightgown, sitting on the edge of the bed. Offred and Alma walk over; Alma urges Janine to get dressed, warning that extra prayers will be taken because of her. Moira arrives, limping from previous punishment. She confronts Janine, shaking her hard, demanding she “snap out of it,” forbidding Janine from using profanity. Moira slaps Janine twice, orders her to put her clothes back on, and warns that the Infirmary, Colonies, and the Chemistry Lab are places where dissenters are taken and killed. Janine cries, pleading for a return home, while Moira threatens severe punishment if she continues to “slip over the edge.” The scene ends with Janine attempting to dress under Moira’s harsh commands.
