CHAPTER 20 - Azazello’s Cream

Chapter 201,924 wordsCompleted

In Margarita Nikolaevna’s cluttered bedroom, she opens the golden box sent by Azazello and finds a yellowish cream that smells of swamp slime. She applies the cream to her face and body; it spreads, evaporates, and instantly alters her appearance—her eyebrows become thick black arches, facial lines disappear, her skin turns pink and luminous, and her hair waves become undone. The cream also relieves a lingering headache and makes her feel weightless. Overcome with joy, Margarita writes a hastily penned farewell note to her husband on a torn notebook page: “Forgive me and forget me… I am leaving you forever.” She then calls out to her maid Natasha, who hurriedly packs dresses, shoes, and undergarments, ignoring valuables.

A sudden waltz and the sound of a car signal the arrival of a neighbour, Nikolai Ivanovich, who sits on a bench in the garden. Margarita taunts him, calls him boring, and then the telephone in her room explodes. She answers; Azazello’s voice tells her to shout “Invisible!” as she flies over the gate, practice flying over the city, then head south toward the river.

A broom in the hallway animates, and Margarita leaps onto it. Realising she has no proper clothing, she grabs a light‑blue shift, waves it like a banner, and, with the broom, flies out the window. She circles the house, shouts “Invisible!” and ascends over the garden, passing the bewildered Nikolai, who falls from his bench when she throws the shift at him. She flies past the front gates, through the maple branches, and disappears into the lane as the waltz grows louder. The chapter ends with her vanishing from Moscow, having fully embraced the supernatural powers granted by Azazello’s cream.
