НАЙМ. ЧОНОТОЙ ХӨӨЦӨЛДСӨН НЬ
The party resumes travel at about 15:00 on the fifth day. Cargo is ferried alternately by Erdene and the elderly former party guide Damdin, while Bayar, Panov, Tomor and Ider ride on horses under Bat’s watchful direction. The steppe stretches like a dry sea, carpeted with ancient khairga stone‑stalks, low dark‑green “saw‑tooth” grasses and poisonous trachy patches that give the ground a bluish‑gray, lake‑like sheen.
While probing the terrain Bayar and Panov spot a small blue‑grey wolf. Bayar shouts “Wolf!” but Panov restrains him, recalling a local saying about driving wolves away on horseback. A frantic chase ensues: spurs, whips and sudden turns as the wolf darts at the horses, biting flanks and forcing the riders to keep the animals moving. Panov’s horse is thrown, its hooves crushing his foot and causing swelling; Bayar’s horse becomes exhausted.
Bayar gives Panov water, tries to bandage the wound with a cloth, and the two argue briefly before falling into a quiet, tear‑filled silence. Their attempts at first aid are hampered by fatigue and the harsh wind. Both compasses are now unusable—Panov’s broken when his horse fell on it, Bayar’s forgotten in a bag—leaving the pair unable to determine direction. The sky turns an odd red, which they interpret as an omen of being far off course.
The men continue searching for the herd (“hox”) but repeatedly lose their way. With no guide—Damdin has refused to join the survey—and dwindling supplies, they resolve to keep looking for a guide at first light if none is found by nightfall. The chapter ends with the expedition exhausted, injured, and increasingly uncertain about reaching the remote Bichig Bogd region.
